Teachers from Kings’ School Al Barsha in Dubai are set to swap their classrooms for the sports field when they take part in this year’s Zurich Corporate Touch 6s Tournament 2017 (Friday 24 February). The Kings’ Team is looking to practice what they preach to their students by highlighting the importance of keeping fit and active, as well as having fun through sport.
Although presently carrying a sports injury, the school’s Director of Sport, Mr Colin Morris, will lead the team from the sidelines as they compete against 28 other trophy-hungry teams on the day. Teachers from a variety of disciplines, from PE to Computing, from Science to School Leadership, will be taking part.
The team’s line up will be completed by Principal, Mr Alan Williamson. A keen and competitive sportsman in his day, Alan will provide plenty of motivation on & off the pitch to ensure his team-mates live up to the school’s reputation as a leading education sports ‘hub’ in the city.
Mr Williamson, comments: “As a school, we firmly believe that sport is an integral part of education and we promote Touch Rugby as we know just how versatile and accessible the sport is to all of our students, boys and girls, from Year 3 upwards. We’ve found that everyone, even those who are not keen on sport, are quickly able to run and catch the ball as a direct result of playing Touch Rugby. The skill-set, balance, coordination and tactics required to play also greatly benefit the P.E. curriculum as a whole. As a consequence, it’s a fantastic, all-round sport for everyone.
“The tournament is also a great way for us as staff to bond and get to know each other better in a social setting. It’s also a great way of showing our students just how much we believe in the importance of incorporating sport and healthy activities into everyday life, both in and outside of school.”
For the first time the popular tournament will take place at the Dubai Polo and Equestrian Club in Dubai and some of the key business and organisations the Kings’ Team will be up against on the day include: Du, Emirates, Lloyds, Cluttons, Transguard, Atkins and DP World.
Colin Morris, adds: “As a Centre of Excellence for Sport and Touch Rugby in Dubai, we’re hoping to have a few sneaky moves up our sleeves! Although we’re not in anyway seriously toned athletes, we’re expecting big things from our staff and are hoping to do well in the competition and do our students proud!”
Kings’ School Al Barsha will not only be entering a team on the day, but they will also be running free kids’ skills’ sessions in both touch rugby and football for children coming along on the day. Other activities that will run alongside the tournament include a free kids’ touch tournament for the U9s and U11s, live music, soft play, food trucks, hops and grapes, and trampolines courtesy of Bounce.
